Motorcycle Liability Insurance

Whether you're an enthusiast or a first-timer, having fun, being responsible and staying safe is what it's all about. Being responsible includes finding the right insurance.

Motorcycle insurance is a way of sharing the risks of riding between you and your insurance company. The way it works is simple. You pay a set premium to an insurance company for coverage. In return, the company promises to pay for specific financial losses that might occur during the term of the policy.

In many states, you must have basic insurance to cover the cost of losses you cause to others in an accident.

The key to finding the right insurance package that fits you, is understanding the different options which are available.

Liability Coverage

(Bodily Injury & Guest Passenger)

Liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage that you may cause to other people involved in an accident. It doesn't cover you or your motorcycle. Find out if your coverage includes Guest Passenger Liability, which provides protection in the event that a passenger is injured on the motorcycle. Whether or not this is included depends on the laws of your state and the company issuing the policy.
Collision Coverage Collision insurance covers damage to your motorcycle if you are involved in an accident. Your insurance company pays for damages, minus your deductible, caused when you collide with another vehicle or object. Collision insurance usually covers the book value of the motorcycle before the loss occurred.
Comprehensive Coverage Comprehensive coverage pays for damages caused by an event other than a collision, such as fire, theft or vandalism. However, just like collision coverage, your insurance company will pay for damages, minus your deductible, and cover only the book value of the motorcycle.

Keep in mind most comprehensive and collision coverages will only cover the factory standard parts on your bike. If you decide to add on any additional optional accessories such as chrome parts, a custom paint job, trailers or sidecars, you need to look into obtaining additional equipment coverage.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage A coverage in personal or commercial auto policies that provides protection against bodily injury loss (also property damage in some states) when the insured is involved in an accident with a motorist who either is not insured, or has insurance, but that insurance either is less than the limits the insured carries, or the limits are not enough to pay the insured's damages. In some states, these coverages are combined; in others, they are listed as separate coverages.

Guaranteed Asset Protection
Imagine you just purchased a brand new Harley-Davidson Street Glide three months ago, and it was stolen right before your eyes as you were eating in your favorite restaurant. Not to worry, you are fully protected by the full coverage motorcycle insurance policy your financial lender required you to get. Right?

In most cases, not exactly, if you look into the details of the motorcycle insurance policy you purchased. The reason is that most full coverage motorcycle insurance policies will cover for total loss such as theft, accident or natural disaster, but these policies typically only cover the depreciated market value of the motorcycle not the outstanding value of your motorcycle loan.

Therefore, if you opted for a zero down payment motorcycle loan on your Harley-Davidson Street Glide, you may have depreciated faster than you have paid down the value on your motorcycle loan. Since your motorcycle insurance policy will most likely only cover the depreciated market value of your Harley-Davidson Street Glide, you are responsible for the difference in the value the insurance company pays you for your stolen or totaled motorcycle and what you actually owe on your motorcycle loan.

In the event a motorcycle is stolen or totaled, motorcycle buyers in the first two years of a motorcycle loan are the most susceptible to not being reimbursed enough from their motorcycle insurance policy to cover the value of their motorcycle loan. So what is a motorcycle buyer to do to protect against the outstanding value of their motorcycle loan?

The answer for some motorcycle buyers is a GAP POLICY. GAP is a total loss policy that will pay the difference of the amount your motorcycle insurance company pay’s you for a total loss on your motorcycle and the value of your motorcycle loan.

Here is a quick example. Let’s say your Harley-Davidson has a going depreciated market value of $17500, yet you owe $20,500 on your motorcycle loan for it. In the event of total loss such as theft or an accident, your motorcycle insurance policy will likely only pay you the used market value of $17500 minus the deductible ($500). However, you still owe your motorcycle lender $20500 so you have a gap of $3,500 ($20500-$17500-$500=$3500). GAP covers the $3500 gap that you still owe to the motorcycle lender since the motorcycle insurance company only paid you $17500 for your stolen or totaled Harley-Davidson Street Glide.

Is GAP for everyone? Not exactly, it really depends on your financing arrangement. Here are some tips in deciding if gap insurance is right for you.

1. If you entered a zero down payment motorcycle loan especially for an extended term like 48-84 months GAP is probably a good idea for you. On the other hand, if you put a large down payment down with your motorcycle loan your probably better without it.

2. If you are getting a motorcycle loan on a motorcycle model that has a history of depreciating very fast, GAP is likely a good alternative for you. To determine this, compare the depreciation rate of your motorcycle with the pay down of the principal on your motorcycle loan. This will give you an indication if you would be upside down if your motorcycle was stolen or totaled.

3. Check all of the details of your full coverage motorcycle insurance policy to make sure that it does not cover the gap between the market value of your motorcycle and the value of your motorcycle loan. A very small percentage of motorcycle insurance policies cover the value of your motorcycle for the first year without considering depreciation. If you are lucky and your full coverage insurance policy covers 100% of the motorcycle without considering depreciation there is little need for gap insurance.

4. Are you purchasing a used motorcycle? If so GAP is an option for you to purchase.

Overall, depending on the financing situation GAP can provide some excellent financial security to motorcycle buyers purchasing their motorcycle with a motorcycle loan. However, each motorcycle buyer’s situation is different and the above four factors can be helpful in determining if GAP is the right decision.

Credit Life Insurance
Protect your future by protection your family. Credit life insurance is a low-cost, voluntary coverage that pay your motorcycle loan off up to the policy maximum if you are your covered joint borrower dies.

Accident/Health Disability Insurance
This insurance can help you plan for your future, not only to further your dreams but to protect you from circumstances unforeseen. Disability insurance is a low-cost voluntary coverage that makes your monthly motorcycle loan payments up to the policy maximum should you become disabled. Payments continue you are no longer disabled, until the loan is paid off, or in the event of your death.
